Musky Inn South is the larger half of a landmark log lodge on the shore of Big St. Germain Lake in St. Germain, Wisconsin. The inn sits on the shared grounds of Deer Run Resort, with level sandy frontage, pine woods, and west-facing views that catch the lake light from afternoon through sunset.

This is not a standard cabin. The main lodge was built in 1907, part of a resort that began as a hunters’ and fishermen’s camp in 1906. For decades it was known as Musky Inn, including years as a supper club, before the property became Deer Run Lodge. A 2014 restoration kept the Northwoods character while updating the living spaces for modern group stays. Guests still talk about the setting: deer in the pines, loons on the water, eagles overhead, and ducklings along the shore.

The lodge Musky Inn South is set up for large families, multi-generational trips, and reunion groups. Eight bedrooms and four full bathrooms, with a spacious great room and dining area that can seat the whole house. The gourmet kitchen and pantry are meant for real meals, not just snacks. A full laundry, Wi-Fi, heat, and air conditioning make longer stays easier.

Outside and on the water The shoreline is the rare kind people look for in Vilas County: level ground to a sandy beach and a shallow sand-bottom entry that is friendly for swimming. A large pier handles water toys; the resort area also has additional docks, a fish-cleaning house, a children’s play area, volleyball, and a fire pit for evening marshmallows. The covered outdoor bar and patio is the feature guests remember — a gathering spot after the boat comes in and before the sunset show starts.

Big St. Germain Lake covers about 1,622 acres, with a maximum depth of 42 feet and an average around 21 feet. It is a known musky lake that also fishes well for walleye, northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and panfish. Channels connect to Lake Content and Fawn Lake, so a day on the water can include more than one basin. Bring a boat or ask about local pontoon and fishing-boat rentals.
